The difference is clear

There's the old saying "you get what you pay for"

and this is particularly true when it comes to lampwork beads!

Like most people, before I knew about lampwork beads I was pretty happy with mass produced beads, thinking that they were pretty. Since I discovered artisan lampwork beads I now appreciate the difference!

To "prove a point" I've copied the design of a mass produced bead so that there is a direct comparison.

Both the beads in the picture are lampwork beads, but the one on the left is one I have made and the one on the right is a mass produced one. While you can only see so much in a picture I hope that you will see the difference in clarity! I always ensure that my glass rods are cleaned before using and I work in a nice clean flame. Already you can see the difference in quality.

What you might not also see from the picture so well, is that I have cleaned the nasty bead release from the hole. When you make beads, you need a bead release so that you can take the bead off the mandrel (metal stick). This leaves behind a dry dusty substance inside the hole. Any half decent bead maker would clean this out, and not only for aesthetic reasons - but also for health and safety ones too. Over time the dust comes out of the beads and as you handle the beads more and more it breaks up into particles that are really not healthy to breathe in.

Sharp holes are also often an issue with mass produced beads. If you use them in your designs they may well be fine for a short while, but over time they will cut through your beading wire and they will simply fall apart.

Now given the choice, I would much rather have 1 artisan nice bead than half a dozen mass produced ones. When I'm selling my work, my reputation is everything. I can't afford to send out a bead that I'm not happy with, and like most lampworkers I just won't do it. I want people to feel confident that when they buy from me that they're buying quality.

Less is definitely more for me!

The Onward Journey

Last week I sold this pretty Poppies Bag Charm, and I received a warm email back from the lady that bought it from me to tell me about the interesting journey it will soon make! (I was intrigued for sure).
Her son if off to the World Scout Jamboree (once every four years and this time in Sweden) and staying in Holland on the way back with a local family. She wanted to send him with gifts for the family he is staying with in Holland that represented our area and our interests. She loved my work and the beautiful flowers reminded me of the poppies we get in the local fields, and indeed our own garden as we scattered some poppy seeds in the garden when our dog died last year. Perfect!
It’s emails like these that really touch me, and make me proud that my little piece of art can mean so much to someone else!

But as if that wasn’t enough, the proceeds from the sale also went to the Royal British Legion. It’s a charity close to my heart, they do so much work for people behind the scenes and they don’t always receive the recognition they deserve!

There's always been something very appealing about interchangeable jewellery, I can always remember being fascinated as a child when my watch had different coloured faces I could change, I think it's part due to the fiddle factor!!

Beside the fiddle factor, it's also very practical too!

I have a lovely red skirt, and at the bottom there are patches of red, orange and purple. These are not colours that I would normally wear together but they look great on the skirt! I had a special family occasion to go to, and planned to wear that skirt. Now it's not easy to get jewellery to go with these colours but the day before I planned ahead and made myself some big hole beads (BHB) the the colour combo and slipped them onto some chains!! The bracelet is a style that is designed for BHB's but for the necklace I just used a regular snake chain - quick and easy!

While I was at it, I made myself a few more in summery shades ... now I can chop and change polka colours to my heart's desire!

Where Inspiration Strikes

Inspiration can come from all sorts of places.

I've had this peachy pink glass for ages, gathering dust on the shelf!! It's not a colour I use much, but I was having a rummage through my bead stash and found some David Christensen cane glass slices .... they have a delicate pattern in the peach shade with blue and yellow ...

Light bulb moment .... I know what glass will look great with them .. and so the peachy pink ribs were born!

X Marks The Spot!!

One of the forums I belong to runs challenges every month, these are a great way to make you think about designs and exercise the old brain muscles!!

One of the challenges was entitles "Pirates" ......... lordy what was I going to do???

Then I sat down and thought about it, Pirates = Treasure!!

So I made up some golden nuggets (with real gold inside them - tis treasure after all!). But before you get to the treasure you'll need a map right! So I designed a ring top with a treasure map , X marking the spot!

Fired up From Flame Off

Not long back from the annual Flame Off event in Towcester, where I had a fabulous few days meeting up with friends, watching artists demo and buy lots of glass goodies!!

I also got to meet new friends, including Christina from Frit & Glass - we have talked a lot over email and facebook - so it was great to finally meet face to face!

While I was there I managed to stock up on some frit (tiny pieces of glass) - like I really don't have enough!! But I see the new colours and I know I'll "need" them. Christina also stocks the really tinly blends that are ideal for smaller beads, and not only does she sell blends, but also single colours. So I bought some of the singles and I've been playing around making up my own blends.

This one was named by Michelle of Sundoor Beads - Rainforest.

And I made these with the frit and the new CiM glass - Atlantis!

Off to play again!

Nuts About Nuggets!

I quite like making free form nugget beads, they're very tactile and with the angled sides it really lets the light shine through!

They can be all sorts of sizes, but I'm tending to like mine chunky, and they look great with silvered ceramics!

And I just love the bright and bold colours!

Love them both left shiny, and etched too!

I just can't get enough!

New Coat = New Broach and New Handbag = New Charm!

For Christmas I was lucky enough to get a new coat, and this coat is a bright shade of pink (you can see me coming!).

I decided that this needed a nice brooch of some sort and so I made myself a pink heart bead. Brooches really aren't my area of expertise, so I sent the bead to my friend George and she turned it into the most fabulous fibula!

I can't tell you how thrilled I am with it, and I've had no end of comments about it.

So now I had a new coat, I had to change my bag ........ the bag I was using was green, nothing wrong with it, just kinda clashed with the coat! I was in town the other week and Clarks had a sale on, imagine my joy when I saw the handbag I was after in sale at half price!! I just had to have it.

Now I have my new bag, it really needed a bag charm to match in with the coat. So here is the new charm

I made the heart bead with silver rich glass and gold leaf and teamed it with silvered ceramic beads and Swarovski crystals, strung on a leather cord!

Gift Of A Blue Heart

I really love making gifts, and Christmas is a great time for this, if not very busy!!

Part of the challenge is to make something that will suit the intended from length, style and colour.

One of the gifts I made this year was this necklace

It started out with the blue heart, cobalt blue isn't normally a colour I go for, but I really like it in this heart. I wanted a longer length necklace so I used some hand-dyed silks from Diane (aren't they just gorgeous!) and to give it some weight and because I thought it looked un-finished, I added a long purple Swarovski crystal.

Just hope she likes it!

Inkspired Challenge

One of the challenges in one of my forum groups last month was to design a piece that was based on a tattoo theme! Good challenge!!

So I came up with the hearts and flowers theme, ideally I would have included a dagger but these are quite tricky to come by, so I used a haging crystal drop instead as the piece looked unfinished without it.

The colours aren't normally ones I'd use together, I was taking myself out of my comfort zone, but looking at it now I'm really pleased with it.

New Currencies on Etsy and a discount

If you've never been tempted to shop on Etsy, now could be the time to give it a go.

Unlike Ebay, Etsy is designed more towards handcrafted items, and over the past few years it has grown in popularity. It has virtual shop like feel to it, as each seller automatically gets their own shop front making items easy to find. All prices are buy it now, so no having to wait for an auction to finish.

Until a few days ago, all listings were in $USD, which I think tended to put people off. But not anymore, now we are able to list in most major currencies, including GBP!! This makes it much easier for local buyers and for sellers as we don't see our prices fluctuating!

All my listings have now been converted into sterling and I've even revised some prices and lowered them. But if that isn't enough to tempt you to have a look, up until the end of December I'm offering a 10% discount across the shop (this applies to the item price and not the P&P). Give Me Colour!!

Long before I stared making beads, I made jewellery. These days I tend to make more beads, but every now and then I get the urge to make up jewellery. Sometimes it's for gifts, but sometimes it's just because.....

This bracelet was a "just because" ........... I do like making beads to suit the season, and coming up blacks, greys and blues will be popular, but I just felt like I needed some colour!!! These beads were made with a light topaz glass, a colour I do love to use, with a little goldstone and rolled in Beady Sam's trifle frit!!

I had a root around in my bead stash and found some coppered ceramic discs and findings that really bring out the gold stone. A further root and I came up with the coloured ceramic discs that I bought from Hilary, don't they look great, and in between I have some cut glass beads that I bought at a bead fair from Buffy's Beads!

When I look at this now, one word springs to mind and that's

Hollows Made Easy!

Last week I was lucky enough to go to Di East's Open Day - a real treat for any lampie!!

It was great to meet up with friends that I hadn't seen for a while, and make new ones too!

Through out the day there were scheduled demos, and lots of show and tells!

During an impromptu show and tell, the lovely Kay (Hollergrafik) showed me how to make hollows the easy way!

I do love hollow beads as they are nice and light weight and are also very reflective, but I was reluctant to make many as they were time consuming and not always easy to get consistent sizes ................ but not any more!

Check-Mate

I had a new customer buy this focal from me a short while ago - Rita, but she does make up jewellery so she called upon her friend Katherine to do the honours.

Katherine makes superb jewellery and she soon got to work on this, but she had a fixed idea in mind for this. The focal has a copper heart inside it, so she knew that to match this Red Magma Swarovski's were called for. These have many many facets so the light really catches the cuts and sparkles like mad!

Recycled Sapphire Fizz

I've wanted to have a go at melting down a glass bottle and making something with it! So when a Bombay Sapphire bottle was donated to me I couldn't wait - the blue in this glass is just gorgeous!

The bottle was thoroughly washed - and then smashed!! Good to go!

I had read that you need to pick up the glass with tongs to prevent flash back, so I gingerly picked up a large piece and warmed in the back of the flame ..... it soon became apparent that this was not going to work .... the glass was cracking before I could melt it!

So I put plan B into action - I warmed up a lump in the kiln first to help prevent the shocking! And yes it worked!!

This glass is quite stiff so it took me a while, but before too long I had a section melted and pulled into a rod and went into action making these beads which were rolled in fizz frit.

I still have quite a stash of the glass left, wonder what I'll make next!

When we have get togethers, there is the traditional bead swap! For this I received 2 hollows from Colette, and I loved Louise's beads to so arranged an additional swap!!

What joy .......... I have a new heart press and I'm really just loving it. The cavity makes just a nice size focal bead to decorate and as the surface is "flatter" it's also easier.

They feel nice and smooth in your hand, almost like stones (unless I've left raised decorations on them of course!)

For starters I've made this bunch of 6, but there will be more to come soon!

The Inspirational Wilds Of Gleninchaquin, Co Kerry

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to visit friends in Kenmare, Co Kerry. And unless you see it for yourself, it really is so hard to imagine the sheer untamed beauty of the place. You can really understand the phrase 40 shades of green!

We hired a car and drove around the Ring of Beara, the Ring of Kerry and also into the Gleninchaquin Park. The scenery changed at every turn, and literally took your breath away! This part of Ireland still possesses the raw natural beauty of the land. If you ever get the chance to visit, do so, you won't be disappointed!

When I came back, I wanted to make a simple bead that reflected the landscape. I made this from a couple of layers of green, and when you hold it up to the light it has a beautiful semi transparent, semi opaque quality. I've added a fossil colour to represent the wild rocks and some clear dots that represent the natural waterfalls found. I hope you like it!

It will be going up for sale on my website in the next couple of days!

You know sometimes less really is "more"!

This lampwork heart was made on a topaz base and decorated with "clio", a reactive glass that reflects some beautiful shades of purples, pinks and blues. I wanted to keep this one simple and so I've matched it with a hand dyed silk from Diane (superb match) and just a couple of Swarovski crystals.

This isn't finished yet - I've added the silk so that you can get an idea but it is for sale and I will finish the length to requirement!

Flip Side Lace!

You may recall I made a "Lace" bead a few weeks ago, and I wasn't sure if I should etch it or not - in the end the customer decided. But while I was pondering, it was suggested to me to etch just one side. I held this thought in my mind, and when I made this bead I decided to give it a go!

Now I appreciate that it's hard to tell from this picture, but it really is quite surreal. I've got the best of both worlds here. One one side it's frosted and shows up the lace really well, and on the flip side it's still got the shiney look - it's quite amazing!! Why didn't I think of this before???

You know, this bead is a keeper but I will be having another go!

Well get a load of this stunning charm bracelet!!

Just looking at it makes me want to put it on my wrist and head off to the beach!! Immediately you know that as soon as it's on, it's going to jingle jangle like any good charm bracelet should!

Glowing Dotty Beads!

I really love these beads, they have a chocolate brown core, and have been encased in transparent blue and decorated with cream dots. But to make them "special" they've been etched (frosted) and this really brings out the colour of the blue glass and kinda makes them glow!

It was my friends birthday at the weekend, and I had my outfit all planned - then I saw these beads in my stash and thought that they'd look great with the top. So I sat there in the beautiful sunshine and made these up - and I was really pleased with them!!

Went to go and get ready and in true girly fashion I changed the outfit at the last minute!!! Good job I have lots of jewellery to choose from !!!

I just adore simple daisies, and this teamed with the silk is just so fresh and gorgeous!

The "Daisy" is a lampwork bead made by myself and I've teamed it with a few Swarovski Crystals, some silver and one of Diane's new "silks". This one is made from Crepe de Chine, and has more definition than the chiffon silks, so looks really good on it's own (sometimes when I use the chiffons' I'd also team them with a thinner silk). The Crepe has a luxurious feel against the skin and gets my thumbs up!

When I made this bead I did wonder what it would look like etched (also known as frosted or matt) - trouble is, once you etch it, that's it ... you can't undo it!)

It was suggested to me to get an idea of how it would look - was to put it in the fridge for a few minutes, take it out and breathe on it! Well that does give you a little idea but I wasn't sure still! So I thought, I'm not deciding - I'll put it up for sale and whoever buys it can decide (I did show a picture of a much smaller bead part etched). That was a good move, the decision was out of my hands!

It was bought and my customer asked for me to etch it, leaving the murrini glossy. WOW, I loved it, the etching does bring out the colour more and shows off the lace effect, and leaving the murrini glossy really adds a new dimension to the overall effect. Don;t get me wrong, I still love the glossy effect too, but now I have the best of both worlds, knowing what it will look like!

Silver Lemon Anyone?

As I've been lampworking for a little over 3 years now, I have amassed lots of frit (small bits of glass - used to decorate beads or for different effects). Much of this is in taster size bags (mainly from BeadySam) - and I realised that I have many that I haven't tried yet (Shame on me I know)

So I had a little rummage and I found a "silver rich" one called Silver Lemon - not having seen a silver lemon, I was intrigued to find out just what this frit would do. Lampworking can be a real journey of discovery, as you just never know how things will end up. The frit you can see is on the right - looks kinda dark a not too interesting doesn't it! So I attached some to the end of a hot clear rod and pulled a stringer (long thin piece of glass), pit aside and made myself a clear base, then using the stringer I wrapped it round the bead, and then encased this with clear.

Now even though I have made the bead - I still don't know how it's going to end up - when beads are hote, they look very different - and when you're trying something new, it can go either way.

Well the kiln faries were good to me, as you can see with the beads in the picture. Now while these are realtively simple beads, the shimmer that the silver lemon gives off is amazing. When I look at the beads it's bright lime yellow, and parts of it has streaks of green running through and in general it's very reflective.

Next time I use this glass I'll try something else with it - who knows where that will lead me. As for these pretties, I'm undecided what to do with them yet .... but I'll let you know!

It's not often people get to see this, like every other beader I have my own special stash!!! It's well known that I have beads all over the house (even in the fridge yesterday - but there was a good reason for that I promise!) but these are kept in a special box (I just had to upgrade to a bigger one!)

It maily contains orpahn beads - ones that are just pretty, but for one reason or another didn't make it inot a set - I won't let go! And I do use them, they're great for bag charms, or dangles on the end of a necklace or even Trudi Style charm bracelets.

Anyway, back to the box - it has several compartments, organised by colour (some colours have 2 sections!) But these are a bit secial as you can see - these are multicoloured - they needed a section of their own. These were all made with 1 rod of glass - Gaffer Chalcedony - aren't they lush!

My precious ......... time to hide them back away!

I have a new flower press, and now I've mastered it I love it! These beadies were fresh out of the kiln yesterday and I just couldn't wait to have a play with them.

The base glass is lt topaz and in the sunlight it's just like golden honey, in the centre is "Clio" a reflective glass that's just beautiful. I've teamed it with green and pinky Swarovski crystals and finished with a starling silver butterfly toggle.!

It's so girly and I love it!

As many of you know, I just love to see how others use my beads. It's strange and enlightening at the same time! Sometimes you have pre-conceived ideas -and then you get a picture and you think - wow, I never thought of that.

Well I've just received an email from the lovely Veryan of Beady Pool to show me how she used these beads. I just adore the mix with the silver, it really sets them off, and they look so carefree!

The strangest thing, and I swear it's true - last night, having made mself some of these beads, I sat down and made myself a bracelet and necklace to go with the earrings I already have!! How bizzare is that! But even more bizzare (or not!) I have also simply teamed mine with silver! Here are the earrings

For Mother's Day I decided to make a set of beads in memory of my Mum who passed away last year. She may be gone, but I still like to make her gifts for special occasions. Her favourite perfume was Blue Grass - and inspired from the colours in the packaging I made some beads. The gift bit came when I soldl them on to raise money for The Dogs Trust, you guessed it, Mum's favourite charity.

Well green is my favourite colour - add to that a bit of shimmer and you have a winning combination!

I really do love the shimmer effect on beads but I can only manage a limited number at any one time, as I make them towards the end of my torching session to make sure the shimmer doesn't get on to other beads!!

Well I decided to have a go at the big hole beads - it was about time really!

So I made a set in 3 colours - lack, Pearl Pink and Pearl White - I like to call this combo Sophstication (This came from a set of beads I made a while ago, but tha's another story.........). So I made these, fitted them with sterling silver rivets and made a set of slightly smaller ones to match. My initial thought was that they'd be used on European / Pandora style bracelet. But Stacey (aka One Silly Moo) had other ideas!!! And I think that the result is pretty cool - this is why I love to see pictures from my customers!

Well the weather has been kinder these past few days for sure! In fact, yesterday was just delightful.

I was out in the studio melting glass, as is my want!! And on Saturday I was playing with my new lentil press that I love. Looking forward to some sunshine I grabbed some topaz, some goldstone and threw in some silver glass frit and murrini - and this is the result!!

Well I'm sitting here with Man Flu (Passed on from the Men in the office coughing and spluttering away) feeling a bit sorry for myself. But when I logged onto my online group I found that I was Jewellery Artist of the month for December!

I won it for this necklace. Made with my own lampwork bead - this was a stocking filler for my sister. I'll have to tell now it's an award winner!!

Well it certainly made me fell better - CHEERS!

Magnetic Electric!

Well it takes a brave person to go out to the studio and make beads in this weather - it's bloomin cold out there don't you know!! Still, I had some new reactive frit to play with so I braved it for a short while!!! (With lots of coffee and quick trips inside to warm me up!).

And I really have taken quite a fancy to it so I have. All of these have been made on the same black base with the frit on the surface, the only difference being that I swirled the one on the left around. And I love the effects that are on all of them - you can really get a superb oil slick reflection - NICE!

I've decided to call this effect - Magnetic Electric, quite fitting don't you think!

Creations

Well, I'm always busy making beads and jewellery for other people, so I decided to make something just for me!!

Using the theme Chinese Water Garden (see previous posts) I made the shell (I can't capture it on here but the shell does contain silver glass that sparkles and reflects the light!). And then I found a swarovski starfish in my stash, and I came across the Jet Swarovski fish while "just looking" on Jilly's beads - I just had to have it. I put it together and strung it simply on black rattail - very soft! So there you have it, it may not be summer, but I love wearing it!

Halloween Goodies

As it was Halloween, I organised a special bead swap in one of the groups that I'm a member of, and I thought I'd share a picture of the haul I received!

I am incredibly nosey, and I just love to see other people's beads, so I was thrilled with all the beads/pendants I received! They make great charms for phones and bags! The large bat in the middle I made into a simple pendant, and that is what I wore on Halloween (I hasten to add that wasn't all I was wearing!!!)

Inspiration Flash

One of my customers emailed me today about the beads she had received, she said:

" I love these beads...simple but beautiful and very stylish."

And that was just the very look I was going for! So I decided to share with her, and you where some of my inspiration comes from. These are the beads that she bought:

And they had been inspired by - ok you guessed it Strictly Come Dancing Costumes!! I do love a bit of glamour and I really love watching the show (and Take Two of course!) - so not only am I enjoying the show, but my mind is thinking - WOW, those colours look great together, how do I get that look into a bead!

If you look a the bodice of the dress, you can see that it has a layered depth, so I started with a white base - I then added on "Antique Clear" - a super lovely colour, and then it needed the black. I wanted the black to compliment the bead and not take over, but at the same time it also needed to be bold - so I placed some kissing flowers around. Popped the beads in the kiln - and they were great when they came out - but still not quite what I was after, they were still glossy and shiney. So I then decided to etch them - this is basically putting them into acid that gives the bead the matt/frosted look. Voila - the beads were ready!

So now you know!

Mojo A Go-go

Ever have one of those days where things just don’t go to plan??? Well last Friday was one of those days for me!!

The next bead fair was planned for November, so we had lots of time. But then there was a cancellation for the Bead Fair at Harrogate in October – too good an opportunity to miss, so we’ve booked up to be there. But not only is this a big fair, it’s also a 2 day fair. So I’m thinking not a problem, I’ll go into the studio and have a session. Only problem was any new design I worked on just didn’t work out as I wanted, and then my mojo went AWOL!!

So I then decide – let’s leave it for now – no point in forcing something that’s just not going to happen! So I decided to head home, and hey it’s Friday night – there’s Strictly Come Dancing and the Tudors to watch. I was off with a spring in my step. Only to discover that Strictly was now just on Saturday’s now and the Tudors had finished the week before!!! I was heading downhill fast, so I had to contend myself with NCIS and Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Brownie - I could have more as it was the low fat yogurt version – yay, something was going my way.

Happily the mojo has returned now, and I’ve made a few more Halloween beads for my bead swap,

and I’ve made some new style beads too! - I'm calling these Chinese Water Garden.

As a side note - the other week I went to see Julie & Julia - a film about someone who admired a famous cook, and she decided to set herself a challenge to cook all her recipes from her book in 1 year, and she would write about it on her blog. She came across the same question as me - am I just rambling on into cyber space, or does anyone actually read this at all? Well, I know I'm not completely alone on here as one of my customer actually told me that she did read it, and she did enjoy me ramblings .......... thank you x

Clearly Hollow

Well, I've had a real thing about hollow beads at the moment ..... as you can see. It took me a while to get into these, and when I first started lampworking - they weren't really "my thing" funny how tastes can change. But they're great - they're nice and light, and because they're hollow they really let the light shine through. I'm wearing some today - a set of three blue ones (like the ones in the front) simply strung on some black cord - they look great! I guess I really should take a photograph of them!!

Well - I've got a couple of bead fairs coming up this weekend - back to back, what was I thinking??? Crazy, yes but it's fun in my world! so incase anyone can make either - here are the details:

Challenges and Swaps!

I love to get involved in swaps and challenges, I find that they take me out of my comfort zone and work towards new styles!!

As it's "summer" I've been working on a challenge with the them Life's A Beach, and after several attempts I finally have something I'm pleased with:

I made this with a mixture of semi precious, ceramic, silver, swarovski and of course my own lampwork - so very unique!

On Frit Happens I've organised a Halloween swap - so I've been thinking of what to make. So far I have a couple of pumpkins to show off - very comical looking, I might have to call them Eric and Ernie!

In the kiln as I type I have a couple of ghosts . whooooooooooo!! Can' wait to see how they come out! Watch this space!

Well I'm sitting here grinning like a loon - I'm a member of an online beading group and I've won Bead Artist and Jewellery Artist of the month for June!

It's such a nice feeling to know that people like your work - and to win these especially when there are such high standards of other work being nominated makes it even more special!!

The bracelet was actually made as a birthday present for my sister Jojo, so I'll have to tell her it's an award winner! I shall be off now to contemplate my award winning speech .................
